What Is The Sterritt Lumber Company?
Since 1841, F.D. Sterritt Lumber has been serving the ever changing building materials needs of New England. From its humble beginnings serving industrial manufacturers at its Cambridge, Massachusetts location, Sterritt Lumber has since developed the versatility to satisfy a wide range of customers from homeowners to the largest commercial contractors and everyone in between! Now in its 3rd generation of Mackin family ownership, Sterritt is poised for the future while at the same time embracing the ideals that spawned its rich tradition and success: quality products and unmatched service.

Sterritt Lumber can satisfy a modern contractor’s comprehensive building materials needs with ease.  In addition, some of Sterritt’s many other specialties include new home construction, remodeling, commercial contracting, professional lumber take-offs, engineered beam calculations, and kitchen design services. Employing over 65 service professionals with remarkable industry experience, just about anything a customer would encounter during the building materials process can be serviced by Sterritt Lumber.  The unparalleled commitment to prompt delivery has impressed both contractors and homeowners alike. With two convenient locations and a fleet of GPS equipped moffitt and boom trucks, Sterritt Lumber can handle even the most difficult jobsites.  This fine company’s delivery service ranges from Boston to Providence, RI, up to Nashua, NH, and west to Worcester, MA.  In many cases, if a customer requires a delivery of items that are in stock, Sterritt can get those items to a jobsite within 24 hours.  It is this type of prompt service that endeared Sterritt Lumber to many of the contractors working in various major construction projects and renovations in downtown Boston.

The Modern Era Of Building Materials
Sterritt Lumber’s versatility is not limited to customer service alone. Along with all of its specialties, Sterritt stocks an equally vast array of products. Many lumberyards carry dimensional lumber, plywoods, and pressure treated stock. Sterritt Lumber certainly does that but also much more. Offering hundreds of moldings, concrete plyform, pvc trimboards, fire treated lumber, exotic hardwoods, Owens Corning insulation, and many TrusJoist products, Sterritt has earned the title of being a “full service” building materials company. In 2006, Sterritt Lumber embarked on its newest venture: green building. We became FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) chain of custody certified to distribute, remanufacture, pressure and fire treat FSC certified wood products. Sterritt has gained many accolades for this distinction including being named “Best of Boston” for 2009 by the Best of Boston Home Magazine for the Best Eco-Friendly Flooring Category.  The professionals at Sterritt are determined to be a continued industry leader in preserving our environment.

More About Sterritt’s Association With The Forest Stewardship Council
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way.

Landowners and companies that sell timber or forest products seek certification as a way to verify to consumers that they have practiced forestry consistent with FSC standards. Independent, certification organizations are accredited by FSC to carry out assessments of forest management to determine if standards have been met. These certifiers also verify that companies claiming to sell FSC certified products have tracked their supply back to FSC certified sources. This chain of custody certification assures that consumers can trust the FSC label.  Sterritt Lumber is a certified chain of custody supplier, distributor, and remanufacturer of FSC wood products.

Here is a summary of some of the points the FCS requires in its full chain of custody. Many of the points listed below will appear almost basic – but in many places even these basic requirements are not fulfilled. This is where the FSC and by association, Sterritt Lumber can have the biggest positive impact on our environment.

  • Prohibit conversion of forests or habitats
  • Respect of international workers rights
  • Prohibition of use of hazardous chemicals
  • Respect of Human Rights
  • No corruption – follow all applicable laws
  • Identification and appropriate management
  • endangered animals
